Green Manganese Technologies Inc. (GMnT), a Canadian cleantech company redefining manganese production, today announced it has signed a Letter of Intent with Scandinavian Steel AB, a leading worldwide distributor of ferrous and non-ferrous metals headquartered in Sweden.
The agreement establishes a framework for collaboration toward a commercial supply arrangement for GMnT's metallized manganese pellets, a cost-competitive alternative to traditional metallic manganese products currently dominated by imports from China. Upon successful scale-up of production operations, Scandinavian Steel AB intends to purchase up to 50,000 metric tonnes per year of metallized manganese pellets for exclusive distribution to the European steel industry. This volume would represent roughly 5-6% of the EU's manganese-based ferroalloy import market, which totals approximately 900,000 tonnes annually according to EUROMETAL.
In the interim phase, Scandinavian Steel AB will support Green Manganese's market development by introducing the company to potential end users within its extensive European network for product testing, performance qualification, and validation under industrial conditions.
"Scandinavian Steel sees huge potential in Green Manganese," said Erik Eriksson, Head of Trading at Scandinavian Steel AB. "It's a cost-efficient alternative to traditional Manganese Metal that will also help end users navigate geopolitical risks, which is highly sought after in today's market. This new way of producing Manganese Metal can redefine where and how Manganese Metal will be produced in the future. We are very excited to take part in this journey."
Green Manganese has developed a proprietary hydrometallurgical process that recovers manganese from low-grade ores, mining tailings, and industrial waste, unlocking value from materials previously considered uneconomical.
"We're excited to partner with Scandinavian Steel to bring our technology to European steelmakers," said Alexey Demykin, CEO of Green Manganese Technologies. "Our process allows us to compete directly with Chinese imports on price while producing locally - something the industry has needed for years. This partnership puts us on the path to displacing imports with a domestic alternative."
The collaboration addresses critical supply chain vulnerabilities in the European steel sector, which faces increasing pressure to enhance supply chain resilience and decrease dependence on geopolitically concentrated manganese sources. Green Manganese's technology enables decentralized production using domestic feedstocks, including industrial waste streams, strengthening mineral security objectives.
